The database for the foray checklists was created by Ursula Hoffmann in the late 1970's, from handwritten checklists for the early years that were quite amusing to work with: different lists recorded the same species under different names because names were changing like mad. Granted that the design is not perfect: there are no notes on weather, habitat, number of people collecting and identifying, unidentified species, quantities collected -- all of which affect the number of species recorded on a single weekend... but at least we have a record of what did grow in a given place at a given time. Also, please note that names and groupings have changed a lot since 1976.
Ursula maintained the database for about ten years, ably assisted first by Anita Björk, later by Gene Yetter who eventually took over, not only entering the names at the foray but also updating the taxonomy. It is a big job that requires meticulous care.
Dorothy Smullen has been the gracious and hardworking recorder for many years.
Both Dorothy's and Gene's contribution to NEMF were recognized at the 2001 Foray, and we must keep thanking them.
